Great story from the Foothill News:

About 300 people packed into Ahwatukee’s Native New Yorker Wednesday night to watch contestants “Battle to the Bone” in the restaurant’s inaugural wing-eating contest. Each week, the contest, sponsored in part by The Fan AM 1060 radio station, tours Native New Yorkers in the Phoenix area. The contestant who eats the most wings in 10 minutes and 60 seconds (so, 11 minutes) is named the winner, and can move on to the grand prize round.“It was fun to see customers come in, regulars as well as people we haven’t seen in a while, to come in and show us their skills,” said Rod Ticknor, owner of Native New Yorker. To judge the amount eaten, the medium-flavored wings are pre-weighed before the contest, and the bones are weighed after the contest.According to Ticknor, about 3 pounds worth of meat is equal to nearly 100 wings. That’s just what Gary Delvin ate to win the contest Wednesday, weighing in a difference of 3 pounds, 0.1 ounces. He was followed closely by Justin Perry with 2 pounds, 7.25 ounces, who had a large cheering squad for encouragement.Among the Desert Vista students cheering Perry on were Lisa Blanco, Chelsea Fox and Kristen Cartwright.“Justin is our best friend,” Blanco said. “Every time we come to Native, he eats about 40 wings, so this is no surprise.”Delvin will go on to compete in the grand prize round Sept. 6 at the Native New Yorker in Tempe. The grand prize winner will receive a two-year lease on a 2008 Right Honda Element. For more information, visit www.battleofthebone2008.com.
